Trama:
Ambientato 183 anni prima degli eventi della trilogia, il film racconta il destino della Casata di Helm Hammerhand, il leggendario Re di Rohan. Viene infatti attaccato senza preavviso da Wulf, un furbo e spietato signore dei Dunlending in cerca di vendetta per la morte del padre; Helm e la sua gente sono così costretti a resistere in un'antica roccaforte di Hornburg, un'immane fortezza che verrà poi conosciuta con il nome di Fosso di Helm. Hèra, figlia di Helm, si trova in situazioni sempre più disperate, ma deve stringere i denti e richiamare a sé tutta la forza necessaria per guidare la resistenza contro il mortale nemico che desidera la loro distruzione.
